It began with a single infantry battle group sent to the southern Afghan province of Kandahar in February of 2002 to assist a U.S. Army task force. The aim was to capture members of al-Qaeda, the Islamist group responsible for the 9/11 terror attacks, dismantle their training camps, and overthrow the iron-fisted Taliban regime, which had given them shelter in the region. As the mission evolved and expanded throughout the near decade that has followed that deployment, thousands of Canadians have poured into Afghanistan, hoping to help the war-torn nation back on its feet. They've engaged in combat, diplomacy and reconstruction efforts, all at enormous risk to their lives. And as Canada reflects upon their sacrifices, it's important to remember all the ways that they've given and all the ways that they've lost in return. The government's official record recognizes 152 members of the Canadian Forces for having died as a result of combat in Afghanistan. But some would argue this number should be higher by two. Former Pte. Lawrence Matthew (Dawson) Bayliss died last November, three years after suffering a blow to his head while on a dangerous stretch of highway outside Kandahar city. A healthy man before his deployment to Afghanistan, his loved ones contend that his death came as a result of that wound. Another soldier's life came to an abrupt end while in Canada in November of 2007. Pte. Frederic Couture committed suicide in his family home three days after Remembrance Day. The young vet had lost his left foot to a landmine while on patrol in the Panjawi district a year earlier.
